Acondroplasia

Achondroplasia is the most common cause of dwarfism in the world. There is a problem with the growth plates of the long bones, resulting in disproportionately short stature. In individuals with achondroplasia, the head is large, the arms and legs are short, but the trunk is of normal size.

Orthopedically, the following problems are seen:

  • Knee deformities (e.g. genu varum)
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal cord compression in the neck region
  • Leg and arm length differences

Treatment approaches:

  • Lengthening surgeries
  • Deformity correction osteotomies
  • Spine surgery for scoliosis and cervical instability

The aim of surgery in achondroplasia is not only to increase height but also to provide independence, pain-free movement and comfort in activities of daily living.
