Arm Lengthening Surgery
Arm lengthening surgery is a special orthopedic treatment method applied to children with short arms due to genetic reasons (e.g. achondroplasia). This surgery can be planned for both aesthetic and functional purposes.
Over time, a short arm can lead to functional difficulties in daily life (putting on clothes, lifting hands above the head, writing, etc.). It can also negatively affect the child’s self-confidence, especially if there is a significant difference between the two arms.
Techniques applied
- External fixator/ Ilizarov method: With the help of a frame attached to the bone from the outside.
- The motorized nail allows bone lengthening from the inside and in a more comfortable way
After surgery
- The physical therapy process is critical
- Formation of new bone tissue and preservation of joint range of motion
Arm lengthening surgery can give very successful results with careful planning, correct timing and a patient follow-up process.
