Brachial Plexus Paralysis (Congenital Arm Paralysis)

Brachial plexus paralysis is paralysis of the upper limb caused by stretching or tearing of the nerve network in the shoulder area (brachial plexus) during labor. It is usually seen in difficult deliveries, large babies or breech presentation (buttocks in front).

This condition can cause partial or complete loss of movement in the arm from the shoulder to the fingers.

Treatment approaches:

  • Passive exercises and physical therapy in the first months
  • Nerve transplantation
  • Tendon transfer surgeries if there is no improvement within 3-6 months
  • Bone surgeries to correct joint stiffness in advanced cases

Interventions at the right time make it possible for the child to regain hand-arm functions.
