Congenital Dislocation of the Knee

Knee dislocation in childhood can develop due to congenital causes or trauma. In congenital dislocation, the structures in the knee joint have not developed in their normal position and this severely affects the child’s walking.

In trauma-related dislocations, sports injuries or falls are common causes.

Symptoms include

  • Sudden swelling on the knee
  • Pain and deformity
  • Feeling of insecurity when walking
  • Knee deformities such as X leg are included.

Treatment depends on the severity of the dislocation and the risk of recurrence.

  • In acute cases, the dislocation requires reduction and fixation.
  • In congenital cases, muscle release, ligament repair and deformity-correcting surgeries can be applied.

Physical therapy support is essential to preserve knee function in the long term.
