Fibular Hemimelia
Fibular hemimelia is a skeletal disorder in which the fibula bone in the outer part of the calf is congenitally absent or short. This condition can cause limb length discrepancy, knee and ankle alignment problems and various deformities in the foot. Finger deficiencies, heel bone deformities and ankle instability are common accompanying pathologies.
The diagnosis is usually made at birth. Some cases can be recognized even during pregnancy with advanced imaging methods.
The treatment process should be planned specifically for each child.
- In mild deformities, special orthoses and prostheses may be sufficient.
- In more advanced cases, leg lengthening surgery (external fixator, ilizarov or motorized nails) can be applied.
- Corrective bone surgery or tendon transfers may be planned.
The goal of treatment is for the child to gain a pain-free, balanced and functional gait.
