Genu Valgum (Inward Bending of the Knees)
Genu valgum is a lower limb deformity in which the ankles remain separated while the knees approach each other, and the legs look like the letter X. It can be considered physiologic between 3-7 years of age, but severe and persistent deformities require treatment.
Symptoms such as feet hitting each other when the child walks, pain or imbalance may occur.
Causes include
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Obesity
- Genetic (bone dysplasias etc.)
- Neuromuscular diseases.
Treatment process:
- Mild cases are observed, and physical therapy is recommended.
- If the deformity progresses, hemiepiphysiodesis (redirection of bone growth)
- Surgical methods such as corrective osteotomy (bone correction) are preferred.
Treatment is planned according to the child’s age, degree of deformity and growth potential.
