Genu Varum (O Leg / Bein)

Genu varum is a lower extremity deformity characterized by the legs flaring outward from the knees, forming the shape of the letter O. It may be physiologic in infancy and usually resolves spontaneously by 2-3 years of age. However, in some children, the deformity becomes progressive or permanent.

Among the causes of pathologic genu varum:

  • Blount’s disease
  • Rickets disease (vitamin D deficiency,)
  • Bone growth disorders are included.

Diagnosis is based on physical examination and leg radiographs.

Treatment:

  • In mild cases, observation, vitamin D supplementation and sunlight baths may be sufficient.
  • If the deformity progresses, hemiepiphysiodesis (redirection of bone growth)
  • Surgical methods such as corrective osteotomy (bone correction) are preferred.

The aim of treatment is to ensure proper distribution of the load and to prevent knee joint problems that may occur in the future.
